One of the most fascinating stories of the San Angelo area is the mystical visitations of Sister Maria Agreda to the Jumano Indians who referred to her as "The Lady In Blue." She lived in a convent and Spain. Sister Maria would go into deep meditations and tell her fellow sisters at the convent that she was spiritually traveling to the Americas teaching the Indians about Christianity. There were over 500 visitations.
Because of her stories, Sister was put on trial before the Spanish Inquisition. She was brutally accused of lying. However just as it seemed there was no hope of being relieved from her accusation of "witchcraft" An expedition of conquistadors and missionaries who had just returned from the Americas came in with a spectacular story.
They had found that numerous Native American tribes from New Mexico, as Far East as San Angelo and west to Arizona had already been converted to Christianity. They told the story of a "white-skinned "Blue Lady" who appeared drifting in a blue haze preached the word of the Lord in their native languages. She guided them in building crosses, places to worship and even showed them how to make rosaries.
The stories matched. She was able to describe the American terrain and what the Indians looked like. Because of the fantastic correlation she was exonerated from her accusers.

But the story does not end here. Sister Maria's body has never decomposed. Her body looks exactly as it did the day she died as portrayed in the photo above.
If you are interested in visiting a place where Sister Maria preached to the Indians may I suggest you visit the Indian paintings at Paint Rock.
